CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - The St. Louis County prosecutor’s office will not seek the death penalty against a man charged with fatally shooting four people.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports an assistant in St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell’s office filed notice that the office will not seek the death penalty against 21-year-old Ja’Vonne Dupree, of St. Louis.
Dupree is charged with four counts each of first-degree murder and robbery and nine other counts in the August 2017 shooting deaths of 56-year-old Patricia Steward, her two sons, 20-year-old Joseph Corely and 10-year-old Terrence Dehart, and 18-year-old Deandre Kelley Jr. They were killed inside a Glasgow Village home.
Prosecutors allege Dupree shot the victims while robbing them of electronics and clothing.
Bell is opposed to the death penalty and campaigned on the issue.
