BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana State Police say a driver who fled a traffic stop hit a dozen vehicles in heavy traffic before his SUV was disabled.

A news release says the chase started when a trooper tried to stop an SUV going 93 miles (159 kilometers) an hour in a 65-mph (105-kph) zone of Interstate 10 in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Police say after the SUV broke down, the driver stayed inside until a dog was sent after him.

Trooper Taylor Scrantz says 20-year-old Elias Smallsreed of Zachary faced 12 counts each of hit-and-run driving and criminal damage, and seven other counts including reckless driving, driving under suspension for a previous driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment.
