RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man accused of crashing a stolen vehicle into another car, killing three people, has been indicted on assault and manslaughter charges.
Suffolk County prosecutors say 17-year-old Nahriek Belford, of Bellport, was arraigned on the charges Thursday. Information on his lawyer wasn’t immediately available.
Police say officers attempted to pull over a car that was reported stolen after seeing it fail to stop at a stop sign in Middle Island in February. Police say Belford, who was driving the car, kept going with police in pursuit.
Belford then hit another car trying to make a left turn, killing an elderly couple.
Belford’s 19-year-old brother, who was a passenger in his car, was also killed.
If convicted of the top count, Belford faces up to 25 years in prison.
