NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A man convicted of being an “enforcer” for a large-scale prostitution ring that brought people into the country illegally to work in New Jersey brothels has been sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years.
Wilmer Chavez-Romero was convicted last June on racketeering and murder charges.
Federal prosecutors said Chavez-Romero was the “enforcer” for the ring that operated in Cumberland, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties. They say he committed assaults and robberies to attack rival operations, punished disloyal members of the organization and carried out killings.
Chavez-Romero, also known as “Charmin,” is said to have been the house manager for the group’s Bridgeton brothel. He was sentenced Wednesday.
