WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) - A man accused in a fatal stabbing in Wahpeton is being held on $1 million bail.

KFGO reports the Richland County State’s Attorney has charged 37-year-old Adam Awender with one count of murder in the death of Billy Joe Phillips. The 37-year-old Phillips was stabbed in the chest and leg at his Wahpeton apartment while a woman was present.

The complaint says Awender claims the stabbing Monday was in self-defense.

Police say Awender told investigators that he threw the knife in a trash bin and washed his clothes.
