PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Free Library system is asking for an additional $15 million in city funding ahead of the mayor of Philadelphia’s budget presentation.
The system’s current budget is nearly $49 million, with about $40 million from the city, and additional support through state funding and private donations. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the library submitted its request ahead of Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney’s budget proposal to City Council on Thursday.
The request comes after a tumultuous season for the 54-branch library system which experienced daily closures due to facility issues and staff shortages.
Both the mayor’s office and library system officials declined to comment on the budget request.
