TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey’s attorney general and state environmental officials have announced a lawsuit against a number of companies over the manufacture and sale of firefighting foam products that the state says contain toxic chemicals.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Superior Court is over aqueous film-forming foam products used to extinguish fuel and other flammable liquid fires. The suit says the products contain or break down into chemicals known as PFOS and PFOA and alleges the companies knew of health and environmental risks but sold the products anyway.
3M, one of the companies named, says it “acted responsibly” in foam manufacture and sale “and will vigorously defend its record of environmental stewardship.”
Chemours said it was puzzled because it doesn’t make such foam and doesn’t use PFOS or PFOA in any products.
