MOUNT OLIVE, W.Va. (AP) - Three inmates have been injured at a maximum-security prison in West Virginia.

West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety spokesman Lawrence Messina told news outlets that officials are investigating an inmate-on-inmate assault Tuesday evening at Mount Olive Correctional Complex in Fayette County.

Messina said two inmates were sent to a hospital and a third was treated at the prison. He says at least one makeshift weapon was used.

State police are investigating and the prison has begun an internal review.
