SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A former Georgia court clerk sent to prison for stealing large sums of money deposited in her care has settled a civil lawsuit by agreeing to forfeit half of her pension.
The Savannah Morning News reports 11 plaintiffs will share about $30,000 a year under the settlement reached with Kim Birge. She is serving a six-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty in July 2015 to stealing $232,000 as clerk of the Chatham County Probate Court.
The money came from funds deposited with the court for legal settlements for children. An auditor testified in court that Birge actually stole about $1 million from 80 victims between 2009 and 2014.
Birge’s attorney, Walter Ballew, said she was addicted to painkillers prescribed for her health problems and also was a “pathological gambler.”
