BERLIN, N.H. (AP) - Steaming is a popular way to cook greens like spinach and kale. But it also could help grow the plants in New Hampshire.
The Burgess biomass power plant in Berlin burns wood chips to make steam, which turns turbines and generates electricity. Excess heat is released to the atmosphere, but thanks to a state grant, the company plans to build a waste heat recover system to power a new greenhouse.
Dammon Frecker, the power plant’s operations manager, told New Hampshire Public Radio that the 4-acre greenhouse will be built next year and will produce more than a million pounds of leafy greens a year.
The city of Berlin also wants to use some waste heat to melt snow and ice on its sidewalks.
