GRETNA, La. (AP) - A man has been convicted on criminal charges in Louisiana after spending $800,000 belonging to a woman who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick’s office says 72-year-old Paul Juarez was convicted Wednesday for exploitation of a person with infirmities. His victim was 85-year-old Marjorie Blake, who died in 2014.
Jurors convicted Juarez after Assistant District Attorney Lynn Schiffman told them Blake died “penniless and alone.”
Connick’s news release says Juarez met Blake at church. It said testimony showed Juarez obtained power of attorney for Blake and transferred more than $300,000 from her account to his without explanation. He also made himself and his wife the beneficiaries to Blake’s life insurance policy and used Blake’s money to pay a business tax bill.
Sentencing has not been set.
