PHOENIX (AP) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection says an agent in Arizona who is accused of using his truck to knock over a fleeing Guatemalan migrant has been indefinitely suspended since June 2018, a month after his indictment.
Matthew Bowen’s case drew widespread attention this week, after his alleged text messages from November 2017 calling migrants “savages” and “subhuman” were included in a filing in federal court in Tucson that came to light.
The agency said Wednesday it could not comment on Bowen’s case “out of respect for the judicial process.”
But it said the agency “stresses professionalism, honor and integrity” and “discrimination and harassment are not and will not be tolerated.”
The migrant was hospitalized with abrasions to his hand and knees.
Trial begins Aug. 13. Bowen has pleaded not guilty.
