WINDSOR, N.C. (AP) - Thousands of people in a North Carolina county have lost their air conditioning during the current heat wave because of a fire at a substation.

Officials in Bertie County say Roanoke Electric Cooperative reported the fire at the Windsor substation at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Some 2,500 customers have been affected, including a high school and a middle school.

The cooperative said it was setting up a mobile substation to restore power, adding that some people may not have power until late Tuesday night.

County officials opened up a cooling station for people impacted by the outage. At 5 p.m. Tuesday, the temperature in Windsor was 96 degrees.
