TARBORO, N.C. (AP) - Authorities have filed charges against a North Carolina woman who they say bit a deputy while swallowing crack cocaine.

WNCN-TV in Raleigh reports the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office says a state trooper was chasing a woman who was on the way to the county jail on Sunday to pick up her husband after his release.

Deputies said Rebecca Carter was placed in the trooper’s car, then was seen putting a small plastic bag containing crack cocaine in her mouth. According to the sheriff’s office, when a deputy squeezed her cheeks to prevent her from swallowing it, she bit his thumb and drew blood.

Multiple charges were filed after authorities said cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in Carter’s vehicle, and more cocaine was found in Carter’s waistband.

It’s unclear whether she has an attorney who could comment.
