ANGIE, La. (AP) - Authorities in Louisiana say three prison guards were fired and accused of excessive force and failing to prevent an inmate’s death.
The Advocate reports B.B. “Sixty” Rayburn correction officers Capt. Brink Hillman, Sgt. John Crain and Sgt. Gary King were indicted on felonious malfeasance and obstruction of justice charges.
Termination letters say Hillman ordered a spit mask for 55-year-old Anthony Carl Smith after Smith threatened an officer. King kneed Smith several times and Smith became “unresponsive.”
The letters say Smith was placed in bed with the mask on and was later found dead. Vomit was found under the mask. An autopsy report says Smith died from inhaling his vomit.
Two other officers were fired. The guards have appealed their termination. The appeal is on hold until the criminal process is completed.
