BARRE, Vt. (AP) - A jury has found a man guilty of second-degree murder in the 2017 shooting death of a man in Montpelier.

Jayveon Caballero, of Barre, Vermont, had pleaded not guilty in 2018 to a charge that he shot and killed Markus Austin hours after the two men were involved in a fight in Barre.

Mynbc5.com reports that defense attorney Daniel Sedon had argued that the killing was accidental, saying the bullet fired by Caballero ricocheted off Austin’s car windshield and hit him as he was standing near the vehicle.

The prosecution said the killing was a premeditated attack and said Austin was shot while sitting in his car and then fell out of the vehicle.

The jury reached a verdict late Monday following the week and a half trial.
