CLEVELAND (AP) - An Ohio man has been convicted of killing his girlfriend’s two teenage children and now faces the possibility of being sentenced to death.
Cleveland.com reports a jury in Cleveland on Friday convicted 30-year-old Matthew Nicholson of aggravated murder charges in the slayings of 19-year-old Giselle Lopez and 17-year-old Manuel Lopez Jr. at their family’s Garfield Heights home in September 2018.
Prosecutors said the teens intervened during an altercation between Nicholson and their mother about texts she’d received from an old boyfriend and were shot in the back while trying to flee.
Nicholson testified he shot the teens because he feared they would shoot him.
Jurors will begin hearing testimony Tuesday for the death penalty phase of Nicholson’s trial.
A message seeking comment was left with an attorney for Nicholson.
