OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An 80-year-old suburban Oklahoma City man has been formally charged in the fatal shooting of his 77-year-old wife, who he said had dementia and that he could no longer care for her.

The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday charged Royce Edward Davis of Midwest City with first-degree murder in the Oct. 7 death of Dorothy Davis. Police say Dorothy Davis was found wounded in bed at the couple’s home and died at a hospital.

Royce Davis is jailed without bond. Court records do not list an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Police say Davis called officers about 3 a.m. on Oct. 7 and said he had shot his wife of more than 50 years and planned to kill himself, but officers later talked him into surrendering.
