RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia woman has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for stabbing her father to death with a butcher’s knife in a fight over car keys.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Mattie Dixon was sentenced Wednesday for second-degree murder in the 2017 death of Jerome Isiah Dixon, who was found dead in a car abandoned along a roadway. Dixon told the court Wednesday that she’s still coming to terms with the fact “that my father died at my hands.”
Attorney Shannon Dillon says Dixon was taken to a psychiatric hospital by police days before she attacked her father. Dixon’s aunt and uncle, Sandra Dixon and James Dixon, testified that their niece also had stopped taking her bipolar disorder medication. They said they had noticed a decline in her mental health.
