ARVONIA, Va. (AP) - Virginia state police are marking the 24th anniversary of the slaying of a popular store owner by urging the public to come forward with any information that could help solve the killing.
Joan Herndon was shot and killed during an armed robbery at Arvonia Produce Market on Oct. 19, 1995.
The 70-year-old Herndon was the only employee in the store that day when emergency dispatchers were notified of a shooting. A significant amount of cash had been stolen from the cash register.
The one-room roadside convenience store was run by Herndon and her husband, Norman. He was known for stocking the market with fresh produce from his multi-acre garden.
State police are urging people with even the smallest bit of information about the case to contact them.
