CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man has been found guilty of an attack nearly 30 years ago that left a woman permanently disabled.

The Charlotte Observer reports 67-year-old Billy Joe Henry was sentenced this month to 60 years in prison. The woman was attacked and shot in the head in January 1992. A cold case unit re-examined evidence which led to Henry being charged in 2017.

A Superior Court jury found Henry guilty of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and first-degree kidnapping. Judge Stephan Futrell declared a mistrial on a charge of first-degree rape.

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office thanked the woman in a news release for her testimony 27 years after the assault.
