RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A spokesman for a North Carolina sheriff’s office says a deputy shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at deputies and refused to drop it.

The News & Observer reports that the Wake County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately identify the man who was killed or the deputy who shot him late Saturday.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Eric Curry says the deputy was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation.

Deputies responded to two calls at the same Wake County address before the shooting. Curry says the man ran into nearby woods during the first call before deputies found him in a car after responding to the second call.

Curry said the man tried to drive away before he pointed a handgun at the deputies.
