Hasbro announced its support for “girl power” on Tuesday with news of its Ms. Monopoly release.
The iconic board game Monopoly will have a feminist twist in which women are paid $240 for passing ‘Go’ compared to $200 for men.
“Girl power: Hasbro is launching a new version of the iconic board game that celebrates female trailblazers,” the company tweeted.
The packaging also boasts: “The first game where women make more than men.”
A statement by Hasbro billed the game as “a fun new take on the game that creates a world where women have an advantage often enjoyed by men. But don’t worry, if men play their cards right, they can make more money too.”
Ms. Monopoly will also replace the aim to acquire properties with inventions by female entrepreneurs.
“With all of the things surrounding female empowerment, it felt right to bring this to Monopoly in a fresh new way,” said Jen Boswinkel, senior director of global brand strategy and marketing for Hasbro Gaming, USA Today reported. “It’s giving the topic some relevancy to everyone playing it that everybody gets a turn, and this time women get an advantage at the start.”
Major retailers will stock the product later this month.
