NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee State Library and Archives is offering a free workshop on the history of slavery in Tennessee.

Author Bill Carey will speak Sept. 14 about the research he conducted for his latest book, going over newspapers printed in Tennessee in 1791 until 1864.

The book examines slavery through slavery ads that appeared in the newspapers. The library said the ads provide scholars and family historians with details about the people named in them.

The workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the auditorium of the Library and Archives in Nashville. Reservations are required, but there is no charge. Free parking is available around the building.
