WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A Delaware man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for fatally shooting a 16-year-old girl who was trying to stop a fight.

A Delaware Department of Justice statement released Friday says 25-year-old Shyheim Warren also was sentenced to a year of probation in the 2017 slaying of Tyneisha Cephas.

News outlets report authorities have said Cephas was trying to break up a fighting crowd outside her boyfriend’s Wilmington home when shots were fired. Her boyfriend’s grandmother, Yvonne Brooks, said at the time that Cephas collapsed and onlookers thought she suffered an asthma attack. Then they noticed Cephas was bleeding.

Warren was initially arrested on charges including second-degree murder. He pleaded guilty in July to manslaughter and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.
