SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man who police say crashed into a vehicle while driving drunk, killing an 11-year-old girl and injuring four others, is being held without bail.
Officials say 23-year-old Selvin Manuel Lima, of Lawrence, crashed into a Honda Civic carrying five people while drunk with an open bottle of liquor in his vehicle on July 13.
Police say 11-year-old Taysha Rohena Silva, of Fitchburg, was killed. Her 8-year-old sister, mother, her mother’s boyfriend and a 15-year-old cousin were also hurt.
The Eagle Tribune reports that a judge referenced that Lima had a suspended license and fled from police in his decision to deny bail.
Lima’s attorney suggested his client be released with GPS monitoring and alcohol testing, because he has two children, suffered his own “significant injuries” and needs to see a psychologist.
