BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - An eighth person has died from COVID-19 in North Dakota, as the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus continues to grow, health officials reported Sunday.
The latest person to die was a Ward County man in his 50s who had underlying health conditions. Health officials say he contracted COVID-19 through community spread.
The state said an additional 15 people have tested positive for the coronavirus since Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in North Dakota to 308.
Meanwhile, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said one male detainee has tested positive for COVID-19. He was booked into the jail Tuesday and had been in isolation.
Officials said 270 people have been screened since Saturday, bringing the total tested in North Dakota to 10,350. They said 10,042 of those tests have come back negative.
Cass County leads the state with 107 cases, followed by Burleigh County with 50.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
