OLD TOWN, Maine (AP) - A man wanted for questioning about a stolen vehicle was shot and killed in an armed confrontation with state troopers outside a home Tuesday morning, officials said.

Thomas A. Powell III, 31, remained in the home for hours during a standoff before emerging with a rifle and firing shots at 8:30 a.m., said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

After retreating, he was fatally shot when he left the home a second time, 10 minutes later, McCausland said.

Police believe Powell stole an SUV during a burglary Monday afternoon in Surry. Police received reports of gunfire at the residence around the time they noticed the vehicle parked at midnight at the home where Powell had been living, McCausland said.

The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating as it does all officer-involved shootings. Two members of the state police tactical team who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave.
