BELTON, Mo. (AP) - A Kansas City man who is accused of shooting a car dealership employee he apparently did not know has been charged with second-degree murder.
Edward Cornejo-Juarez, 21, also is charged in Cass County with armed criminal action in the death of Kyle Wanner, 28, at the Show Me Auto Mall in Belton.
Surveillance video obtained by Belton police show Wanner talking to a man at the dealership on April 16. Wanner was shot after the two men walked out of the building. He died at the scene.
Witnesses said after the shooting, the suspect walked back inside the business, sat on the floor, placed a handgun on a counter and then left the business, where he was arrested, The Kansas City Star reported.
Cornejo-Juarez told police he bought the business and stopped to visit when he shot a man he didn’t know because he thought the man “was going to come at him,” according to court records. It’s unclear what led to the confrontation.
Cornejo-Juarez also reportedly told police he had smoked what he thought was “synthetic marijuana” before going to the shop.
He remains in the Cass County jail with bond set at $250,000 cash.
An attorney for Cornejo-Juarez was not listed in online court records.
