NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont city council has voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Newport Police Chief Seth DiSanto.

The local police union voted no confidence in DiSanto and submitted a letter to the mayor and city council on March 10 questioning his ability to lead, the Caledonian Record reported.

The city council accepted the resignation Wednesday night and it is effective as of Monday.

Union members listed concerns about bullying, integrity, and a failure to treat officers fairly and impartially.

DiSanto has been on paid leave since March 18.

Residents and journalists protested that the separation agreement was not immediately released when it was discussed in public.

The council did not immediately release the separation agreement, under the advisement of the council’s attorney John Klesch. Klesh cited a Vermont Supreme Court precedent that gives the council seven days to release the agreement.
