SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A Springfield man who has not been seen since July 2019 likely was killed, Springfield police said.

Police arrested a man and woman Tuesday night in connection with the suspected death of 34-year-old Elijah McReynolds. The couple were booked into Greene County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder but were released Wednesday without charges, The Springfield News-Leader reported.

Police said in a news release a third person who is considered a primary suspect in McReynolds death is in custody on a different jurisdiction on unrelated charges.

Police began investigating in August 2019 after they received information that McReynolds had possibly been killed in Springfield before his body moved.

The people involved in the case knew one another and this was not a random event, police said.
