MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) - Two teens are in custody after escaping from a juvenile detention center in Moorhead and fleeing in a county-owned vehicle, according to authorities.

The teens escaped from the Northwest Juvenile Detention Center Sunday afternoon. A short time later, a passerby reported he saw the two juveniles get into the vehicle and drive away, officials said.

A Moorhead police officer spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to pull over. A brief pursuit was terminated when the officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A sheriff’s deputy in the area spotted the vehicle again and tried to make a traffic stop but the vehicle fled on Interstate 94 with speeds hitting 100 mph, KFGO reported.

A Barnesville police officer used stop sticks on the interstate. That blew out at least one tire but didn’t stop the vehicle which exited into Barnesville. There, the deputy used a maneuver to stop the vehicle and the teens were arrested.

Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says the two are facing a number of charges, including escape, fleeing, and vehicle theft.
