PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A woman died when her car crashed into a utility pole in Providence early Wednesday morning, bringing power lines and the transformer down onto her vehicle, officials said.

The two-car crash occurred just after 5 a.m. on Vandewater Street, sending one of the vehicles into the pole.

“One car struck a pole, and transformers came down on top of that car landing on the occupant area of the vehicle,” Battalion Chief Kevin Jutras said.

The live wires made it difficult to reach the victim, he said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not made public.

The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Power was knocked out to area businesses.

The cause remains under investigation.
