BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore man awarded nearly $8 million in November in the Gun Trace Task Force police scandal has been arrested in Virginia after a woman was shot at a motel, authorities said.
Umar Burley, 50, was charged by Harrisonburg police with malicious wounding and attempted murder, The Baltimore Sun reported Friday. Police said additional charges are pending because Burley shot at police during a chase.
Police said officers called to a motel around 10 a.m. Thursday for a shooting found a 32-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the face. Harrisonburg Police Sgt. Scott Drugo said that the woman was engaged to Burley.
Officers said Burley fled in a truck and was spotted on Interstate 81 by a Virginia state trooper who tried to stop him. Burley sped away after shooting out the back window of the trooper’s vehicle.
The pursuit ended on Route 11 in Shenandoah County, where state police said officers forced Burley off the road .
In November, Burley and a friend were awarded a total of nearly $8 million. They were sent to prison after drugs were planted on them a decade ago during an encounter with members of a rogue police unit that brutalized, robbed and falsely arrested residents.
