JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Corrections said Friday that an inmate serving 12 years for a manslaughter conviction has died after being hospitalized several times since July.

James Earl Price, 60, died Wednesday in the hospital of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, the department said. An autopsy will be done.

Price was sentenced in July 2017 in Forrest County after pleading guilty to manslaughter for stabbing a man to death in 2015.

At least 97 inmates have died in Mississippi prisons since late last year. Several inmates died during outbursts of violence in late December and early January. The U.S. Justice Department announced in February that it is investigating the state’s prison system.
