The Washington Football Team placed safety Deshazor Everett on injured reserve Thursday after the starter underwent season-ending surgery.

Everett suffered a chest injury in Sunday’s win over the San Francisco 49ers. His absence figures to be a blow to Washington’s defense as the 28-year-old had established himself as a physical force in the back end of the secondary.

Everett replaced Troy Apke as the starting free safety in Week 6 following Apke’s benching the week prior. Everett, primarily a career special teamer, was a pleasant surprise for Washington with his hard-hitting and ability to fly to the football. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio praised Everett for giving “juice” to the lineup.

Everett, though, will be done for the season. This is Everett’s second injury of the year as he also missed two games with a high-ankle sprain.

Safety Jeremy Reaves figures to take Everett’s spot in the lineup, moving ahead of Apke in the depth chart.

In a corresponding move, Washington signed veteran running back Lamar Miller. Miller, who was most recently on the Chicago Bears practice squad, won’t be eligible to play in Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks because of COVID-19 protocols, but he was added for depth with rookie Antonio Gibson nursing a toe injury.

Gibson has not practiced this week and could miss his second straight game.
