BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham was charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a fellow student who was killed on campus while selling a set of headphones, police said.
Carlos Londarrius Stephens, 22, of Alabaster surrendered to authorities Monday and was charged in the death of nursing student Destiny Washington, 20, of Trussville, news outlets reported.
Washington was shot outside Hill Student Center on Thursday night while trying to sell headphones, authorities said. She was then driven in a private vehicle to Children’s of Alabama, the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Court records weren’t available Tuesday to show whether Stephens had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
Stephens played football at UAB in 2017 as a freshman but was no longer on the team.
