LAS VEGAS (AP) - A senior associate dean at Tulane University School of Medicine has been named as the new dean of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, medical school.
UNLV President Marta Meana announced Wednesday that Dr. Marc J. Kahn will take his new post April 1.
Kahn will follow Dr. John Fildes, who temporarily succeeded medical school founding dean, Barbara Atkinson, in September.
Fildes, a surgeon who won national recognition for directing trauma care following the Las Vegas Strip massacre in 2017, will return to his role as chairman of the medical school surgery department. The shooting killed 58 people and was the deadliest in modern U.S. history.
Kahn is a hematologist and medical oncologist. He was named in 2018 as a master of the American College of Physicians. In September, he was elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, the oldest medical college in England.
He serves on the hematology board for the American Board of Internal Medicine and as chairman of the American Society of Hematology Committee on Educational Affairs.
UNLV School of Medicine began in July 2017 and now totals 180 medical students and more than 300 residents and fellows.
Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced a plan in November for a permanent campus funded by $155 million in donations, superseding a plan approved in July by university regents to let UNLV fund the project with $125 million in bonds.
