PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - A fire at a Los Angeles-area apartment building Wednesday killed a 4-year-old boy and injured his mother and 3-year-old brother, authorities said.

Firefighters were sent to the eight-unit building on east Washington Boulevard at about 2 p.m. and saw flames coming from two first-floor apartments, officials said.

Neighbors used ladders to try to rescue people trapped on the second floor, the Los Angeles Times reported.

About 55 firefighters helped douse the flames and found the 4-year-old dead in one unit, interim Pasadena Fire Chief Bryan Frieders said.

The boy’s brother and 29-year-old mother were hospitalized in “very serious condition,” city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian told the Times.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

“We don’t have any reason to believe it’s suspicious” but an arson investigation team was sent to the scene, Frieders said.
