Colt McCoy is staying in the NFC East.

The former Redskins backup agreed Thursday to join the New York Giants and backup 2019 first-rounder Daniel Jones, according to multiple reports. McCoy was not expected back in Washington.

McCoy, 33, departs the Redskins after six seasons. Last year, he was on track to win the team’s starting job, but didn’t properly heal from a leg injury suffered a season earlier. He eventually got healthy and started Week 5 against the New England Patriots, but was benched once coach Jay Gruden was fired.

McCoy started a total of seven games in Washington, famously helping upset the Dallas Cowboys on “Monday Night Football” in 2014. But his tenure was derailed by injuries. In 2018, for instance, he broke his leg two weeks after taking over for an injured Alex Smith.

With New York, he’ll serve as a backup for Jones. The Giants needed a backup after Eli Manning retired in the offseason.

The NFL Network first reported the news.
