HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - A police officer was shot in the chest but was protected by his ballistic vest before a Nevada man who challenged police to a shootout was fatally shot in the garage of a home in suburban Las Vegas, authorities said.
Audio and body-worn camera video made public Thursday by Henderson police showed officers trying to talk with an agitated and armed Mason Paul Workman, 40, before the exchange of gunfire late April 19.
A woman who lived with Workman had called 911, described him as drunk and said he had posted an image on social media of her and guns he owned. The woman worried that Workman could harm himself or others.
The officers who shot him were identified as Alejandro Alcantara and Conrad Lillegard. The wounded officer was not identified. Photos showed he was treated for a severe chest bruise and a bullet fired from a handgun lodged in his protective vest.
The Clark County coroner said Workman died April 20 of multiple gunshots.
Workman described to officers weapons he owned, and Deputy Police Chief Michael Denning said in a department video that investigators found an assault-style rifle and ammunition magazines just inside the front door of Workman’s home.
The woman was not injured.
