LADSON, S.C. (AP) - A man and woman who shot at police two separate times during a long chase and stole a car at gunpoint from a South Carolina rest stop as they fired at authorities are now charged with murder, authorities said.
Kayla Dyanni Rivera, 21, and Shikeem Wigfall, 25, waived their right to a first appearance in court Saturday on charges of murder, failure to stop for blue lights and two counts of carjacking causing great bodily injury.
The two were taken into custody after a 50-mile (80-kilometer) police chase early Friday where they had gun battles with officers both at a rest area on Interstate 26 near Charleston and a North Charleston apartment complex where they were arrested, authorities said.
Investigators have not said if the person killed at the I-26 rest stop was the victim of a carjacking on involved in the chase. The name of the dead person has not been released.
Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine if the person killed was shot by one of the people arrested or police, the State Law Enforcement Division said.
No police officers were hurt.
It wasn’t known if Rivera and Wigfall had attorneys.
