CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A 100-year-old woman from Monongalia County has become one of the latest victims of the coronavirus outbreak, state health officials said Saturday.
The state announced three additional deaths linked to the virus on Saturday.
Besides the 100-year-old woman, the deaths of a 69-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, both from Kanawha County, were the latest virus-related deaths confirmed by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
“We take the reporting of these deaths very seriously and extend our deepest sympathies to their loved ones,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR cabinet secretary.
That raised the state’s death count to at least 50 since the pandemic began.
There have been more than 1,180 coronavirus cases in West Virginia from more than 51,110 tests, according to the state health department.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up within weeks. For some, especially older adults and those with existing health problems, it can bring about more severe illness and even death.
