HAMMOND, La. (AP) - Two Louisiana State Police troopers were injured when they were struck by another agency’s police car while assisting with a chase early Wednesday, authorities said.

The troopers were dispatched to help the Hammond Police Department with the pursuit around 2:15 a.m. and were in a roadway removing a tire deflation device when the department vehicle hit them, State Police said.

The troopers were taken to a hospital. One was treated and released with minor injuries, while the second trooper remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday morning, according to the agency.

Police said that after the suspect vehicle’s tires were disabled, the car crashed at a nearby intersection and the suspects inside escaped.

Police did not say what led to the initial chase.

Authorities were continuing to investigate.
