RENO, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada city council rejected a proposal that would have folded land in the Sierra foothills into the city’s jurisdiction.

The Reno City Council unanimously rejected the proposal Wednesday concerning more than 1.6 square miles (4 square kilometers) of property, The Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

The proposal was a request from landowner Evans Creek LLC of Roseville, Minn., which sought to shift its jurisdiction from Washoe County to Reno.

Frank Thompson, an attorney for Evans Creek, said the northern end of the property is bounded by developed land and plans for additional suburban, single family homes would be “high end infill” that could help alleviate a housing shortage.

Although city staff said the annexation could have brought the city $9 million to $31 million in new tax proceeds over 20 years, the figures did not outweigh council members’ objections.

Councilwoman Naoimi Duerr said there was not enough information about potential future development to assess fire and financial risk caused by development.

Council member Devon Reese expressed concerns about the financial burden of firefighting in the area, while Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus disagreed with the assertion that development could reduce the region’s housing crisis.
