POWHATAN, Va. (AP) - A Virginia man accused of brandishing multiple weapons and shooting at cars was hospitalized after exchanging gunfire with a sheriff’s deputy, authorities said.

The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police were dispatched to a home Sunday night on a report that a man was sending text messages threatening to kill family members and law enforcement, the sheriff’s office said in a statement obtained by news outlets.

Authorities arrived to find Joshua Sprouse, 25, shooting weapons at passing vehicles, according to the office. Authorities said Sprouse later exited the house and shot at a deputy, who returned fire and struck the suspect.

Sprouse was taken to a hospital where he was in surgery early Monday morning, news outlets reported.

The deputy involved was placed on administrative leave and State Police were reviewing the shooting.
