TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A letter carrier stole mail containing prescription drugs that had been sent out by the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, according to federal prosecutors.

Christopher Donohue, 60, of Middletown Township, was arrested following an investigation that began after several packages containing various medications went missing from the Belford Post Office in Middletown, where Donohue worked. The intended recipients were area veterans, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Donohue stole a package on March 2, a theft they said was consistent with the other incidents. Donohue then tried to steal another package on Wednesday that had been packed with inert pills inside a prescription bottle by agents investigating the thefts, prosecutors said.

Donohue was arrested after the latter incident, authorities said. He was charged with theft of mail by a postal employee and could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

It wasn’t known Friday if Donohue has retained an attorney.
