COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A tactical team cleared a jail dormitory in Columbus Thursday after a Wednesday night brawl that left three corrections officers with minor injuries.
Muscogee County Sheriff Donna Tompkins tells news outlets that two inmates got into a fight Wednesday evening and when officers went to break it up, other inmates in the dormitory swarmed them.
The outnumbered sheriff’s deputies retreated to avoid further injury or being overpowered. One was taken to a hospital and released after treatment.
Some of the inmates involved in the fight are members of gangs, the sheriff said.
Inmates were removed from the dorm Thursday by the tactical team with no resistance, separated, and transferred to other sections of the jail where they can’t interact.
Tompkins said her office will bring criminal charges against those who attacked the deputies.
