SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah man who allegedly set his pregnant girlfriend on fire has been charged with aggravated attempted murder.
Andrew Todd Curtis, 45, of Moab was charged Friday and is being held without bail in the Salt Lake County jail. He faces five years to life in prison if he’s convicted.
Authorities say they received a report that someone had been set on fire at a motel in Murray the morning of Oct. 22. They found a 34-year-old woman who had been badly burned.
The victim told police she and Curtis got into an argument, and she then left the motel room to smoke a cigarette outside. Curtis ran up to the woman and threw a cup of clear liquid onto her, witnesses told police. He then spit on her, lit an object in his hand, set the woman on fire and ran off.
The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition with burns over 70% of her body, police said. She was pregnant with Curtis’ child.
Curtis was arrested later that morning. Police said he had a lighter and was carrying a bag that contained clothes that were covered in accelerant.
Curtis pleaded guilty in 2011 to fatally stabbing a man outside a Denny’s restaurant in Moab. He pleaded guilty to criminal homicide by assault and was released from prison in April.
No attorney was listed who could comment on Curtis’ behalf.
