LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) - A man suspected of firing shots from a homeless encampment at transportation workers and highway patrol officers in Southern California on Thursday was later found dead in a tent, authorities said.
Southbound lanes of Interstate 605 in Los Alamitos were closed after the shooting was reported near an on-ramp around 9:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
CHP officers spent hours searching for the shooter. Around 1 p.m. officials announced the man was found and he had been pronounced dead, though they didn’t give details about how he died, the Orange County Register reported.
Authorities later said the Caltrans workers happened upon the man while doing maintenance at the on-ramp and reported it to a pair of CHP officers who were with them, the newspaper reported. The shooting happened shortly after officers approached the man, according to the CHP.
It was not known what prompted the shooting or if any weapons were found, the Register said.
